Some UK comp results
I'm going to stop making proclamations about how often I'm going to post here. It just makes me look stupid. In the last month, I've entered 2 competitions in Britain.
First one was the Nottingham Open, where I entered the foil and sabre. I was a bit disappointed in my foil performance. Although I had hard fights, there were no bouts in the pooles which I could not have won; as it was however, I lost 3 fights over the two sets of pooles. I was knocked out in the last 32 by the number 8 seed (Rob Anderson, a US fencer). The results aren't up yet but I think I came something like 25th, out of about 80 entrants. In the sabre I fenced crap in the pooles - probably as a result of not fencing enough competition sabre recently - and then got knocked out in the last 32. Again, I think I came about 25th overall from 50 entrants.
The conclusion from this weekend? I must just be better at foil than sabre.
While in Nottingham, Marcos and I stayed with Marcos' Great Aunt Ethel. A wonderful woman, who is definitely one of the best cooks whose table I've ever had the pleasure of eating at. Also her son Kevin was very nice to drive us to and from the airport in Nottingham.
I'm just back from the Birmingham Open where I fenced just the sabre. I took an interesting approach to the travel, in that I flew in to Birmingham airport on a 6.30 flight on the Saturday morning, and went home on a 22.25 flight the same evening. This is an excellent way of fencing, since you only take one day out of your weekend, which seeing as it is Easter, was a long weekend anyway.
The competition was massive: 107 sabreurs. Probably as a result of my experiences in Nottingham, I fenced very well in the pooles (4 up 2 down) and seeded 38th. I then got a bit lucky with the draw, and beat my higher ranked opponent in the last 64. Overall I came 30th, (they're very efficient with getting the scores up on the web-site). It good to feel that the training I've been putting in over the last few months is paying off.
Of to Durham next week for the 5-Nations, I have no details as of yet for the travel arrangements, suppose I should get off my ass and get them...
